なかなか情報が入ってこない小さなギャラリーやマイナーなギャラリーを、メルボルンっ子のサンディーさんが月に1度、紹介してくれます。

これでアートの街、メルボルンを思いっきり楽しめそう♪

Hi. I’m Sandy and I will try to be a bit of a gallery guide for you as you search out interesting art in Melbourne. I enjoy making things (mostly out of textiles) and I am addicted to travel because I think travel, like art gives me a new perspective on the world I live in. I love living and working in Melbourne because there are so many wonderfully crafty, creative people everywhere you look and l enjoy seeing what other people are making, drawing, sculpting and designing because I love seeing the world through other people’s eyes.

こんにちは、サンディーです。皆さんがメルボルンで面白いアートを発見できるよう、ちょっとしたギャラリーガイドをしていきたいと思います。私は物を作る事が大好きです（主に織物から）。あとは旅行に夢中。旅行ってアートと同じで、新しい世界観を発見させてくれるでしょ。メルボルンにはクリエイティブな人達がたくさんいるので、私はここでの生活、仕事を本当にエンジョイしています。他の人達が何を造っているのか、描いているのか、彫っているのか、デザインしているのか、見るのが私は大好き。他の人の目を通して世界を見る事ができるから。

Flinders Lane Craft Victoria

While a lot of Melbourne’s galleries are still busy painting the walls and getting themselves ready for the first exhibitions of the year, up the top of Flinders Lane Craft Victoria is already off to a running start. Make sure you go in with some time to spare because there is plenty to keep you downstairs for more than a little while.
If you can tear yourself away from COUNTER – which is the shop to go to for anything from quirky locally made toys to glassware and jewellery you will find yourself waylaid by three artists who will introduce you to new ways of looking at the world around you.

メルボルン中のギャラリーが今年最初のエキシビジョンの準備のため、未だ店内の壁をペイントするのに忙しくしているにも関わらず、Flinders Lane Craft Victoriaはとっくに準備万端。あなたを店内に引き留めるたくさんの作品が階下でお待ちかねだ。是非時間の余裕のある時に訪れて欲しい。カウンターには昨日までの世界観をそっくり塗り変えてしまうような3人のアーティストの作品が並ぶ。きっとそこから離れがたくなってしまう事だろう。

In Gallery 1 architect and ceramicist Susan Robey shows Inhabit. The assemblage of doorless dwellings look set to scuttle off the edge of their plinth and out the door. Like the idea of a scurrying building the surface of these sculptures is also a contradiction, the slightly shambolic, malleable almost textile surface is achieved through a ceramic material which is thin, fibrous and strong- paperclay fired at 1220˚c. Each thin, textured slab is meticulously jointed and stands solidly on stocky stilts. The strange inhabitations have been masterfully built by an artist intimately acquainted with what it takes to make a building stand the test of time. In the end it is not the works themselves that shift about –instead our ability to classify what it is we are looking at is destabilised.

ギャラリー1には、陶芸家であり建築家でもあるスーザン・ロベイの作品” Inhabit.”が展示されている。アッサンブラージュ様式のドアのない家の幅木は足を模しているのか、家の外に飛び出しまるで何かから逃げ出しているよう。この小走りしている家の外見は、矛盾でいっぱいだ。セラミックと繊維、紙粘土を1220℃で焼き上げる事で、薄く、粗い布地の様な表面に仕上がっている。薄い板と厚い板が奇妙且つ絶妙ににくっつき合い、頑丈な高床の上にしっかりと建っている。風化に耐えうる家を建てることに関しては特に精通しているアーティストによって造られたこのおかしな家。この作品は私達の目に映るもの、それが何なのかの認識を覆してしまう代物だ。

After the almost monochrome of Robey’s work in Gallery 1, be prepared for an assault of colour. There is one colour in Gallery 2 to be exact –Red. Elfrun Lach’s show Corollary -an exhibition of contemporary jewellery and objects, has come out of the artists investigations into the history and current day fragility of coral. The uses and misuses of this sacred skeleton in cultures around the world have led this stunning material to the edge of extinction. Who better than a jeweller to explore the ethics of adornment. Through her beautiful red bower of work Lach presents proud new possibilities of ornamentation for the new year- a vibrant yet lightweight necklace of red bottle tops perhaps?

ほぼモノクロのRobeyの作品が飾られたギャラリー1を後にすると、視覚へ突き刺さる色が用意されていた。鮮烈な赤。ギャラリー2はElfrun Lachの“Corollary”、コンテンポラリー・ジュエリー＆オブジェクトの展示からは、昨今危機に瀕している珊瑚の歴史へのアーティストの探求心が垣間見える。世界中での珊瑚の使途と、間違った形の使用により、この美しい生物が絶滅の危機に追いやられようとしている今、求められる装飾品への倫理観の探究心が宝石職人以上に篤い（あつい）者が果たしているだろうか。赤いボトルのふた（？）で出来たネックレスは、未来へ向けて、装飾品の新しい可能性を確かに示した。

Around the corner in gallery 3 you enter the world of Gerry Wedd. In his show, In The Woods you encounter a familiar yet strangely grotesque ceramic landscape of flora and fauna. Wedd admits feeling discomfort in the Australian landscape, but his work does not seek to escape from this discomfort, rather it faces it. You look down upon wind blown willows, a violent encounter between an angry man and a debilitated animal, and the animals are angry too. The grass nibbling kangaroo we are all so familiar with has turned feral and wields an axe. Wedd plays with ceramic traditions of the past, using our common familiarity with the arcadia of the willow plate and the blank safety of Staffordshire figurines to interrogate the safe, blank and cute narrative of contemporary Australian life and to ask what lies beneath.

ギャラリー3の角を曲がると、Gerry Weddの世界、“In The Woods”が広がっている。親しみのある、だが少し奇妙でグロテスクなセラミックの庭にたたずむ動植物たちが、あなたを出迎えてくれるだろう。Weddは、実はここオーストラリアの地形があまり好きではないと認めているが、彼の作品はそこからの逃避ではなく、むしろ正面から向き合っていると言えるだろう。視線を作品に落とすと、風に揺れている柳の下、怒った男と衰弱した動物（こちらも怒っている）が暴力の予感をはらませて対峙しており、我らおなじみのカンガルーが残忍にも斧を振りかざしているのが目に入る。Wedd は私達に共通の過去の伝統や親しみやすさを通し、今日のオーストラリアの様々な事象の裏にはどんな嘘がひそんでいるのかをセラミックで表現した。危険なスタフォードシャーの像が、安全とは何かを問うている。
