The Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme is designed to promote mutual understanding between Japan and other nations, foster international exchange at the local level and enhance foreign language education in Japan.
There are two types of jobs*:
- Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) :
assisting in English language education in Japanese schools (teaching experience and Japanese language ability not essential). - Coordinator of International Relations (CIR) :
assisting in Japanese Government offices in international activities (high level of Japanese language ability required). - * Contracts for both job types are for a minimum of 1 year.

For reference purposes, the time-line for recruitment is generally as follows:
- Applications are due in December, with the first screening process conducted over January. Notification of progression to the interview stage is in January/ February, with interviews held in February in Melbourne, Hobart and Adelaide.
- April arrivals are short-listed and announced in March. Other short-listed candidates and alternates are announced in April, with notification of selection and placement in May and departure in July/ August. Contracts begin in either April or July/ August, depending on departure date.
* Please note that applicants must be a national of the country where recruitment and selection procedures take place by the time they submit their application form. For Australian applicants, interviews will not be conducted overseas - including Japan.
* As one of the aims of the JET Programme is to foster exchange between Japanese youth and young professionals from participating countries, applicants should in principle be less than 40 years of age.
